Severe Weather

Interested in severe weather? Have you ever wondered what it is like to chase tornadoes? Lyndon faculty and students are engaged in severe weather research that includes participating in national field programs.

In 2003, we participated in the Bow Echo and MCV Experiment (BAMEX). The objective of this experiment was to better understand how bow echoes create surface wind damage. Check out our damage survey web page by clicking here.

This year, we participated in VORTEX 2, the Verification of the Origins in Tornadoes Experiment. VORTEX 2 involved over 100 scientists, students, and support staff collecting data on supercell thunderstorms. Our goals are to better understand how tornadoes form, how they create wind damage, and how to improve tornado forecasting. Lyndon faculty and students will participate in the second field phase of VORTEX 2 in 2010.
