- Ph.D. - Atmospheric Sciences, University of California,
Los Angeles

Survey of Meteorology, Thermodynamics, Physical Meteorology,
Remote Sensing, Boundary Layer Meteorology, Mesoscale Meteorology
Research Interests:
Professor Atkins professional interests lie in the area
of Mesoscale Meteorology with a current focus on Severe Local
Storms. Current research efforts are focussed on how bow
echoes create surface wind damage. In particular, we are
looking at the role of mesovortices in the production of
damaging surface winds and their genesis. We are analyzing
quasi-idealized simulations of bow echoes produced by the
WRF model. A two-part paper on this topic has been submitted
to Monthly Weather Review. PDF versions of these papers are
available below:
We are also looking at how low-level stable layers may impact
bow echo damaging potential.
Professor Atkins will also be participating in the upcoming
VORTEX II experiment slated for 2009 and 2010. Specifically,
Professor Atkins will be performing damage surveys with Roger
Wakimoto (NCAR/EOL) and collecting cloud photography data.
Professor Atkins is also currently serving as an Editor for
Monthly Weather Review.
