Climate change presents humankind with a monumental challenge.  We are changing the composition of Earth’s atmosphere and a major climate shift is already underway.  Global temperatures are steadily climbing, extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, glaciers are melting at an unprecedented rate, and sea levels are rising.  These impacts are expected to escalate.  At Lyndon, we believe there is a critical need for trained professionals to confront these challenges.  We want you to be part of the climate change solution.  The new Climate Change Science B.S. degree is designed to empower students with the training and skills necessary to make a difference.

As climate change progresses, the need for expertise is expected to grow.  The skills gained through completion of the Climate Change Science B.S. degree are applicable in a wide variety of career settings, such as:

  • renewable energy
  • climate change adaptation
  • public outreach and communication
  • policy
  • climate risk management
  • urban and natural resource planning

Climate Change Science Faculty

During their time at Lyndon, CCS students will work closely with faculty in two departments: Natural Science and Atmospheric Sciences. Faculty in both departments teach a variety of courses that incorporate climate change concepts. They are also involved in externally funded climate change research. This research is highly relevant to existing government and business initiatives including climate policy, energy development, environmental impacts, and climate change adaptation/mitigation.

Climate Change Science courses

Every Climate Change Science student will take a variety of general science courses along with meteorology and climatology courses. This interdisciplinary approach allows students to learn about natural and human-caused climate change through various scientific lenses. Throughout their course of study, students will gain first-hand experience with data collection, obtain technological skills necessary for climate data analysis and environmental assessment, and learn about the current state of the science and impacts through observational, theoretical, and modeling perspectives.  Students will learn about various applications of the science by taking interdisciplinary electives and they will develop effective communication skills to help bridge the gap between scientists and non-scientists.

Humanity is the major influence on the global climate change observed over the past 50 years. Rapid societal responses can significantly lessen negative outcomes. … Improvements will come from pursuing the research needed to understand climate change, working with stakeholders to identify relevant information, and conveying understanding clearly and accurately, both to decision makers and to the general public.

NOTE: This is a suggested pathway only, and will likely vary depending on student preparation. Each student must also take courses to fulfill all LSC degree requirements including at least 40 General Education foundation and elective credits.
